RESTORING THE BIODIVERSITY OF OBEDSKA BARA USING WATER BUFFALOS

Public Enterprise “Vojvodinašume”

Thanks to this initiative, the Special Nature Reserve Obedska bara has received 10 water buffaloes, which will graze in the area to remove harmful species that threaten native plants and animals. This will increase the amount of open water surfaces and create conditions for the return of extinct species. This natural process will replace the work previously done by humans and machinery, significantly saving material resources and time. By grazing, the buffaloes will clear 25 hectares of wet meadows, ponds, and forest edges, enriching the soil with nutrients. This will lead to an increase in the populations of local birds, insects, and fish, and farmers will also benefit from improved soil quality.
