SOLUTIONS FOR GREEN TRANSITION OF SERBIA

We present innovative solutions for the green transformation of the Serbian economy and society. They all have a positive impact on our environment and public health. At the same time, they contribute to making companies and products from Serbia more competitive on export markets, enable sustainable economic growth and the creation of new, green jobs.

The innovations presented contribute to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, switching to renewable energy sources, increasing energy efficiency, and reducing energy poverty, reusing waste to make new products, improving air quality, and preserving biodiversity.

They have been developed by private and public companies, civil society organisations, research institutions and local governments. These innovations have been brought to life thanks to the support of the European Union (EU), the governments of Sweden, Switzerland and Serbia, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Government of Japan, as well as the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The projects that have supported the development of these green solutions are implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in close partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia.

Thanks to the “EU for Green Agenda in Serbia” project, continuous support for green investments has been ensured since 2022. A total of 94 green projects have been implemented, with an overall value of USD 56.4 million, supported by co-financing amounting to USD 6.9 million provided by the European Union and the Governments of Switzerland, Sweden, and Serbia.

In partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the European Investment Bank (EIB), within the framework of the “EU for Green Agenda in Serbia” project, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) established a new model for financing green investments in 2025. In addition to beneficiaries’ own resources and donor grants, this model also includes specially tailored, more favorable loans from commercial banks. The increased involvement of banks in financing green projects in both the private and public sectors aims to accelerate the green transition in Serbia.

Through this new financing model, eight banks and leasing companies have so far joined in financing green transition projects in the private and public sectors, with more than USD 13 million committed.

Furthermore, through support for the development of strategic and legal frameworks, UNDP, together with its partners, contributes to creating an enabling environment for an accelerated and sustainable green transition in Serbia.
