This innovative solution contributes to energy efficiency, pollution reduction, climate change adaptation, durability of materials and life cycle extension – by greening school roofs in the City Municipality of Stari Grad in Belgrade. The green roof was installed on the terrace of the “Drinka Pavlović” primary school, with the possibility of expanding the project to other schools in the city. The construction of green roofs increases the amount of greenery in this central city municipality and reduces the impact of rainwater as the greenery and soil absorb it. The roofs will last longer as they will be less exposed to high temperatures and water, and the classrooms will be thermally insulated. In addition, these green roofs will play an important educational role, both for the students and for parents, teachers and other school staff.

Green classroom on the school terrace
Starting this school year, classes at the “Drinka Pavlović” Elementary School in Belgrade are being conducted in an innovative environment, on the “green roof”, i.e., in a spacious garden that replaced the concrete slabs of the school terrace. The green area of 152m2 combines different species of grass, flowers, medicinal herbs, and trees, and it includes an automatic sprinkler system that waters the plants evenly, spends an optimal amount of water, and takes care of the watering dynamics in line with weather conditions.
