The Okanj Pond Special Nature Reserve is a unique Pannonian reserve consisting of salt marshes, salt ponds, meadows and steppes, which is of crucial importance for the conservation of biodiversity in the region. By restoring the canal network and creating bird islands, this solution overcomes the problem of water scarcity, improves the water regime, and creates new habitats for at least 17 strictly protected and protected bird species, and improves the resilience of the ecosystem. The solution involves the local community and adopts an interdisciplinary approach that ensures the long-term sustainability of the results as well as the social and economic benefits for the entire area.
