FROM WASTE SLUDGE TO BIOGAS

Cardboard Factory "Umka"

The cardboard Factory “Umka” is the largest recycler of paper and cardboard waste in Serbia. The company operates as a facility with significant impact on the environment (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control – IPPC facility) and must adhere to the best available techniques (BAT) to minimize the environmental impact of its industrial activities. The recycling of paper and cardboard discharges wastewater containing organic substances and chemicals used in the process, which requires appropriate treatment before discharge into the environment. In order to comply with the prescribed parameters for the chemical and biological values of the wastewater, the company will install an anaerobic wastewater treatment plant for its processing, which will reduce the amount of waste sludge and generate biogas that can be used for various production processes. In addition, a study will be conducted on the potential to use biogas for future investments and to improve the factory’s energy efficiency.
