Electrification of the Vehicle Fleet and Utilization of Waste Heat

MAK International LLD

MAK Internacional, a family-owned meat processing company based in Niš, has been operating for 25 years, employs more than 220 people and has an annual production capacity exceeding 9,000 tonnes. The project is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through transport electrification and improved energy efficiency in production. It includes the procurement of five electric delivery vehicles to replace the existing diesel fleet, as well as the installation of a waste heat recovery system in refrigeration facilities. Recovered heat will be used for hot water preparation and to support the existing steam boiler system, reducing fossil fuel consumption and improving the overall energy efficiency of the production process.

The project’s innovation lies in combining two decarbonization measures that are usually implemented separately: electric mobility and industrial waste heat recovery. Both will be supported by the company’s solar power capacity, creating an integrated low-carbon operating model. Expected impacts include annual savings of around 33,000 litres of diesel, a reduction of nearly 60 tCO₂ from transport, lower propane consumption of 323-581 MWh, and an additional reduction of 72-129 tCO₂ through improved energy efficiency.
