The Regional Landfill in Pirot has proposed a solution to achieve energy independence by utilising renewable energy sources. A solar power plant with a capacity of 150 kW has been installed at the landfill, which covers all the landfill’s electricity needs, while the surplus electricity is fed into the public grid. In order to reduce pollutant emissions, the Regional Landfill will purchase an electric truck for transporting bulky waste, and procure a corresponding charger with a roof with solar panels. In addition, a study is being carried out to test the potentials for using the wood chips from waste, as an additional energy source This solution can set an example for other regional landfills on how to fulfil the new environmental standards related to reduction of pollution and emissions.
