City of Sombor Improving Infrastructure and Enhancing Citizen Safety in the City of Sombor through Solar Lighting and Sustainable Circular Economy Principles

The project involves the installation of 10 autonomous off-grid solar-powered public lighting poles at intersections along busy road corridors within the City of Sombor that are currently not connected to the electricity grid. The locations were selected based on traffic safety analyses, traffic volume, and their potential for supporting sustainable tourism development. The project foresees the use of modern all-in-one solar LED lighting systems with integrated smart controls, operating entirely independently of the electricity grid. This solution enables the use of renewable energy sources, reduces CO₂ emissions, and eliminates the need for extensive construction works and additional power infrastructure.

The project is aligned with the Local Circular Economy Roadmap of the City of Sombor for the period 2026–2030, particularly its objective of improving the quality of public services through the application of circular economy principles and environmental protection measures. At the same time, it contributes to the implementation of the City of Sombor Development Plan 2022–2028 by promoting sustainable and energy-efficient solutions in public infrastructure. Project implementation will improve traffic safety on currently unlit road sections, enhance the quality of public services, and improve the living conditions of the local population. Energy-independent public lighting systems will enable faster and more efficient infrastructure improvements in areas where lighting is most needed.

In addition to delivering direct benefits to citizens and the environment, the project serves as a pilot model for the modernization of public lighting based on circular economy principles, with the potential to be replicated at other locations throughout Sombor and across the wider region.
