This solution demonstrates the use of constructed wetlands as a natural, low-energy system for wastewater treatment. The pilot system is being established at the Institute of Animal Husbandry in Belgrade-Zemun and is designed to treat wastewater from livestock production. The solution combines pre-treatment, vertical-flow and horizontal-flow wetland units, a treated-water reservoir and selected aquatic and wetland vegetation.
In this way, the project tests a nature-based wastewater treatment model that reduces the need for more energy-intensive conventional treatment and can be replicated in other rural and agro-industrial settings.
